Inspirational Journey from Luxembourg

The inspiration for the Kandula elephant earrings stems from a profound experience in Luxembourg during the summer of 2013. I encountered various elephant statues around the city, each painted in vibrant colors and symbols of Indian, Thai, and African art. This sight sparked my curiosity and led me to discover “The Elephant Parade,” a global art movement highlighting the plight of Asian elephants on the brink of extinction. The movement’s goal to raise awareness and contribute to the sustainable development of these animals’ habitats deeply resonated with me.

Translating Emotion into Art

Moved by the elephants’ majestic presence and the tragic reality of their endangered status, I sought to transform this emotion into something beautiful. My research revealed the grim consequences of tusk poaching and habitat destruction, further fueling my desire to create a meaningful tribute. In 2015, I began sketching and crafting designs inspired by the elephant’s face, studying its symmetry and cultural significance.

Kandula: A Symbol of Loyalty and Bravery

The name Kandula carries historical significance, honoring an elephant renowned for his loyalty and bravery around 200 B.C. during the reign of King Dutugemunu in ancient Sri Lanka. This legacy of courage and devotion profoundly influences the design, aiming to capture not just the physical beauty but the spirit of this magnificent creature.

Gemstone Adornments and Artistic Flair

The Kandula elephant earrings are adorned with gemstones that enhance their artistic appeal. Rounded gemstones embellish the ear borders, princess-cut gemstones set aslant decorate the forehead, and marquise-cut stones form the intense gaze of the eyes. The shimmering garnets, iridescent peridots, and radiant topaz gemstones transition seamlessly from day to night, adding a touch of elegance to any setting.

To achieve harmony and balance, I chose to embellish the ears with embossed filigree patterns on a matte surface. This decision was influenced by the rich history of the filigree technique across various cultures. Additionally, the earrings feature a hinge at the top and bottom of the trunk, allowing free movement and adding a dynamic element to the design.
