The Kandula collection is emblazoned with the charm of the Orient.
The result of an peerless know-how, this elephant belly chain is an achievement of profound sculptural prowess. It manages, in its meticulously assembled complexity, to channel an intense and surreal likeness to the strength and intelligence of the Elephant, all while striking an artistic chord all of its own.
It is a collection that pays a tribute to a strength, intelligence and liveliness as the aspirational apogee of young womanhood. In the summer of 2013, during my visits to the city of Luxembourg, I came across various elephant statues that were situated all about the town.
They were an array in different sizes and were all painted with vibrantly varied colors and symbols of Indian, Thai and African art. In curiosity, my research would unveil a totally new world to me.
I learned that these 93 elephants were actually part of a global art movement called the elephant parade that intended to draw attention to the plight of Asian elephants on the verge of extinction. I learned additionally about the robust international efforts to contribute politically and financially to the sustainable development of the living space for these animals.
The impetus for this public worry was never lost on me: further research would showcase a grim world of maladies, both of violence and ecological collapse, that would plague these innocent beings.
Acknowledging the current state of such a majestic creature saddened me, and I wanted to translate this feeling into something beautiful, which, in turn, would be shared with all. The delicate ecological balance of Africa is disastrously offset with every gruesome execution of these creatures.
At the time, the tusk poachers’ campaign to slaughter in mass and plunder every bodily tangible from these creatures tore their habitats apart. These factors, though macabre, would soon precipitate my first sketches and crafts of this design in 2015.
Given the size of the elephant, I preferred to use its face as my muse. I studied its symmetry, how it was valued in different cultures, and how they portrayed them artistically. I also wanted to add gemstones as natural as a natural extension to its artistic flare; gemstones that would be tailor cut to fit various spaces on the piece’s face.
This elephant belly chain is completed by rounded gemstones for the borders of the ear, princess-cut gemstones set aslant for the forehead, and, of course, the suitably shaped marquise cut to shape the intense gaze of a pair of eyes.
From the sprinkling of color in the shimmers of garnets to the iridescent glows of peridots or topaz gemstones, all work beautifully and easily transitions visually from a day to night setting. As finalizing attributes, I chose to embellish the ears with embossed filigrana patterns on a matte surface, as this creates an effortless harmony and balance.
It was also with intent to combine diverse cultures, all of which have some history with the filigrana technique. We additionally added a hinge on the top and bottom of the trunk to allow free
